Harro van Asselt

Harro van Asselt is an Academy Affiliate of the Academy. He is Professor of Climate Law and Policy with the Centre for Climate Change, Energy and Environmental Law (CCEEL) at the University of Eastern Finland (UEF) Law School. He is also a Visiting Researcher with Utrecht University's Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development and an Affiliated Researcher with the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI). He is also the Editor of the Review of European, Comparative and International Environmental Law (RECIEL).

 

He has over 15 years of research experience, and is an expert on international climate change law, regime interactions in international environmental law, and trade and environment interactions. His key publications include:

Harro is also a member of the World Commission on Environmental Law, a member of the International Law Association's Committee on Sustainable Development and the Green Economy in International Trade Law, a Senior Research Fellow with the Earth System Governance Project. He also sits on the editorial boards of the Carbon & Climate Law Review, Earth System Governance, Global Environmental Politics and International Environmental Agreements: Politics, Law and Economics. He further is a contributing author to the Sixth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

 

Prior to joining UEF Law School, Harro was a Senior Research Fellow with SEI's Stockholm and Oxford offices. He was also a Marie Curie Fellow with the Environmental Change Institute at the University of Oxford and a Researcher with the Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM) at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. He was also a visiting researcher with the Finnish Institute of International Affairs (2012), the University of Georgia School of Law (2008), and the Tokyo Institute of Technology (2007). He holds a PhD (cum laude) from the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. His PhD thesis, titled The Fragmentation of Global Climate Governance: Consequences and Management of Regime Interactions  was published by Edward Elgar in 2014.
