Susanne Schmeier is an Associate Professor at IHE Delft – Institute of Water Education in Delft, The Netherlands and an Affiliate with the International Water Law Academy (IWLA) at Wuhan University. Her teaching and research focus is on international water and environmental law, water conflict and cooperation and legal and institutional arrangements for preventing and mitigating conflicts over shared water resources.

Bionote
Susanne Schmeier is an Associate Professor at IHE Delft, which she joined in July 2018. Additionally to her work at IHE Delft and the IWLA, she is also a Courtesy Faculty Member at Oregon State University and serves in a number of expert groups, including the UNECE Water Convention Expert Group on Transboundary Water Allocation and the Expert Advisory Group on Transboundary Water Management and Diplomacy of UNESCO-IHP. She also advices international organizations, donor agencies and in particular river basin organizations on matters of international water law, water cooperation, water conflict management/negotiations and organizational reform and restructuring processes.
Prior to joining IHE Delft, Susanne worked for the Gesellschaft für internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) in various functions, including as the coordinator of GIZ’s transboundary water management portfolio. Previously, Susanne also worked for various international and regional organizations, including the World Bank and the Mekong River Commission, and think tanks.
Susanne studied international relations and international law at the University of Leipzig, Science Po Paris and the University of London. She received her PhD from the Free University of Berlin – in collaboration with the Berlin Graduate School of Transnational Studies and Oregon State University.
