Andrew A. Allan is a Senior Lecturer at the School of Law, University of Dundee, where he has been the Director of the UNESCO Centre for Water Law, Policy and Science since 2019. Andrew has worked on water issues for 20 years. He has extensive experience working on large-scale multi-partner research and consultancy projects straddling many disciplines and across a wide variety of geographical scales and locations. His recent work has focused on managing and facilitating the complex interface between governance and the social and physical sciences, especially in the developing world. He has also worked in recent years on the problems posed by climate change and the need for legal frameworks to adapt to those challenges. He has significant experience in analysing national governance frameworks and their effectiveness, across a range of jurisdictions and across states around the world. He teaches water, environmental and climate change law to master’s students, and currently supervises 4 Ph.D. students.
He has participated in a wide range of projects, including leading the Scottish Government-funded interdisciplinary River Health project on the Ganges (2017-19), and serving as the Dundee lead in the CARIAA programme funded transdisciplinary project Delta Vulnerability and Climate Change: Migration and Adaptation (DECCMA) (2014-2018); ESPA Deltas (Assessing health, livelihoods, ecosystem services and poverty alleviation in populous deltas – 2010-14); GENESIS (Groundwater and Dependent Ecosystems: New Scientific and Technical Basis for Assessing Climate Change and Land-use Impacts on Groundwater Systems) across 16 European case studies, and the ACQWA “Assessing Climate Impacts on the Quantity and quality of Water” (2008-2013) amongst others.
